Message from the Director
The year 2024 has been a positive one. Despite turmoil in the international arena triggering multiple local and regional conflicts, and despite considerable uncertainties surrounding economic development in most countries, connectivity among nations and peoples continues to progress. The Belt and Road Initiative has overcome conflicts, sanctions, and certain obstacles. China’s railway freight services- a symbol of both connectivity and the Belt and Road Initiative, remain robust and continue to expand. The success of the China-Laos Railway demonstrates the transformation and prosperity that connectivity can bring, showing that even a least-developed landlocked country, largely overlooked by most developed nations and international organizations, can benefit. The Belt and Road Initiative and the connectivity it fosters have become both a source of hope and a practical measure for economic recovery and growth in most countries- much like the historic ancient Silk Road.
The Institute has been fortunate to receive new funding support, which has allowed us to consolidate and begin expanding teaching and research related to Belt and Road countries. Our two master’s programmes enroll 280 students each year, and we are supported by a rapidly growing and enthusiastic alumni community. They help promote our programmes, refine the curriculum, and expand academic networks and business understanding for everyone associated with the Institute.
Our goal is to globalize the Institute, along with its programmes and activities. It will not merely be a local institution in Hong Kong, but one that represents and connects Hong Kong to the global system created through the Belt and Road Initiative. We have already assembled an international faculty team and will admit more overseas students, while organizing academic activities for the global community. Just like our launched journal, The Hong Kong Belt and Road Research Review, the Institute consistently defines its vision and mission from a global perspective.
